Happier is first of all an feel of happiness. Tal Ben-Shahar’s book is a guide to addition happiness no matter how happy you are when you start reading. There are, however, situations the author excludes. Those where there is major depression and anxiety disorders, and those for whom external circumstances clearly prevent a victorious life.

Many of Ben-Shahar’s recommendations are based on investigate over the last 10-15 years by Csikszentmihalyi, Diener, Emmons, Frederickson, Gilbert, Lykken, Lyubomirsky, Peterson, and Seligman. Martin Seligman initiated the distinct science of mind movement, of which happiness is a critical part, when he was President of the American Psychological association in 1998. Ben-Shahar includes the works of Herbert Benson and Jon Kabat-Zinn on meditation, and Nathanial Brandon on spontaneous sentence completion. His bibliography will stimulate the researcher’s curiosity.

Book

Happier is a book that has something for everybody. It is divided into three parts. Each chapter is easy to read. Each chapter has practical exercises to help growth your happiness quotient. A lot of ground is covered in 176 pages.

Part 1 includes normal happiness exercises. A simple gratitude journal is gift in chapter 1. chapter 2 has both an practice to help you survey your happiness archetype and a meditation exercise. Meditation is carefully so foremost to happiness that Ben-Shahar devotes Part 3 to assorted meditations. In chapter 3, the author has you make a list of what’s meaningful and what makes you happiest. Then he has you write down how much time you devote to these activities weekly and monthly. chapter 4 sentence completion exercises narrate insights that bring about meaningful change. The second practice in chapter 4 has you envision your ideal week based on the data collected in chapter 3. chapter 5 focuses on goal setting exercises.

In addition to these exercises, Part 2 looks at three exact areas of your life: education, work and relationship.

One of Ben-Shahar’s moving observations is that happiness is not an end state, but rather something you work towards your whole life. Thus you can be happier each day with no end in sight. In order to growth your happiness, he talks about the value of rituals. Namely, that they contribute structure which is critical to the creative process. Also, without them you are likely to become reactive to other people’s demands.

“The most creative individuals — whether artists, businesspeople, or parents — have rituals that they follow. Paradoxically, the routine frees them up to be creative and spontaneous.” (p10)

Ben-Shahar strongly promotes having gratification both now and in the future. While there are times when it may be critical to “…forgo one for the other, it is possible to enjoy both most of the time.” (p25) He also is clear that it is not possible to be happy all of the time. To believe this is possible is to set yourself up for disappointment.

In addition to enjoyable and simple exercises to growth happiness, what Ben-Shahar’s puny book is, is a religious doctrine of life. One that allows for ups and downs without giving up the gift and future goal of happiness. While other writers on happiness have said much of what Ben-Shahar has presented, and in more detail, he has put the data together in a new way. A way that makes being happier accessible now.

The author explains in his work not only the consequences of the closeness of Hercolubus but also the true cause of climatic changes and the great geological performance that is taking place deep down on the seabed, the corollary of which we are already experiencing with the new tsunami.

Based on his direct and conscious experience, V M Rabolu shows in his book techniques to eliminate our psychological defects and tools for Astral corner as the only real ways to escape the forthcoming cataclysm.

“I wish he was more romantic.” That’s a complaint that virtually every woman has had in her relationship at some point. Some women, typically someone we know, is the lucky one. She’s the one with the man who is Mr. Romantic. He does things that make us gasp in delight and we wish so much that our guy had just a fraction of that degree of romance within him. Sadly, most men just stumble when it comes to romance. They don’t know how to connect those dots. We’re then forced to settle for a lovely relationship that isn’t quite as fulfilling as we’d wish. You don’t have to settle though. You can actually subtly guide your man towards being much more romantic so that every day feels like Valentine’s Day to you.

What Won’t Make Him More Romantic

Snippet

We all secretly think that we know exactly what to do to get our man to respond in a specific way. The problem is that we really don’t have a clue. This is particularly true when it comes to romance. To avoid making anymore of those unwitting mistakes, here’s a list of things you want to avoid doing if you’re hoping to get your man to turn on the romance:

Make him feel guilty for not being romantic. When you attempt to make a man feel guilty for not being romantic, you’re in essence wasting your breath, your energy and your time. Women indulge in all types of strategies in an attempt to make their man feel guilty for not being more romantic. Things like crying when he doesn’t bring flowers after an argument, pouting when he forgets to pick up a birthday cake for you or using the silent treatment if your holiday gift is a blender. Men don’t tune into this type of guilty ploy. He’ll be oblivious to it, which in turn will just frustrate you more.

Compare him to a man who is romantic. If your last boyfriend was romantic, keep that information to yourself. Don’t share it with the man you’re in love with now. He’s not going to hear the part about how your last guy was so romantic, he’s only going to hone in on the “my last boyfriend” part of the snippet. He’ll be jealous, hurt and angry and your plan will go up in smoke.

What Will Make Him More Romantic

If you wish he was more romantic, you have to take control if you want to make it happen. Men don’t suddenly decide that today is the day they are going to be romantic. If he hasn’t been up to this point, you need to be his guide into the world of romance. Here are a few things you can do to encourage him to be more romantic:

Be romantic yourself. Men will often mirror the behavior of the woman they’re involved with. If you want him to write you a love letter from the heart, do that for him. Put real effort into it and write down everything you feel for him. He’ll be touched and he’ll want to return the gesture. You can do this with many things. There’s absolutely no rule that says that a woman can’t buy a man flowers. If you do occasionally, he’ll soon take the hint that you want him to do the same for you.

Tell him directly what gifts you want. If there is a gift giving occasion approaching, tell your man directly what you’d like him to get for you. If you hope that he’ll be able to anticipate that you want diamond earrings, don’t be shocked if you get a gift certificate for a clothing store. Men aren’t good at reading the minds of the woman they love. If you don’t want to be disappointed, be direct. In time, he’ll begin to see a pattern in what you like and then he’ll be able to purchase something on his own that you’ll love.

Compliment him when he is romantic. A man’s definition of romance often greatly differs from a woman. He may take your car to fuel it up if he sees its running on empty. That’s romantic to a man. That’s why it’s essential that you thank him for things like that. Those gestures are meant to make you smile and make your life easier, so always thank him. If you do that, he’ll know you truly appreciate him and it will push him to want to do even more for you.

Now a major request for retrial picture, The Soloist is a story about a very unique interaction between two men living in Los Angeles, California. Nathaniel Ayers is a man who attended Julliard as a young person, but never completed his education. He was overcome by the pressure and competition at Julliard and started receiving bad grades. While he was failing school, every person still recognized that he had world-class talent, but he just could not focus and find order in his life.

Eventually, Nathaniel was forced to drop out of school by his own lack of reasoning stability, and ended up living on the street. He found his way to Los Angeles and placed there due to the fact that a sculpture of Beethoven was created in one of the city’s parks. Nathaniel made his way nearby the city and often played his dilapidated violin in a nearby tunnel which provided him with adequate acoustics.

Book

One day, Steve Lopez crossed paths with Nathaniel Ayers. Lopez was intrigued by Nathaniel, and as a journalist for the Los Angeles Times, saw Nathaniel as his next column. He began asking Nathaniel questions and interviewing him, and building a bond. Lopez learned about Nathaniel’s past and how he no ifs ands or buts did attend Julliard as a world-class musician. The story kept getting better, and Lopez published a series of articles to engaging readers about the life of Ayers.

Lopez never staggering the reaction that came from publishing his articles. Citizen replied with the need for more facts on Nathaniel’s life, and even started sending in musical instruments for him to play. Nathaniel had been playing an awful two-string violin since he did not have the money to buy a new instrument or even strings. He received new violins and a new bass; the instrument he had longed for since leaving Julliard.

However, Ayers could not lug the instruments nearby with him in the streets due to the fact that he could be mugged or have the instruments stolen while sleeping. Therefore, Lopez and Ayers agreed that the instruments could be stored at a local extra needs factory where Ayers could go any time he wanted to play and hopefully receive help. Lopez realized that Ayers had reasoning disability and insecurities and if Ayers would spend time at the factory playing his violins and bass, he may resolve to stay in one of the free apartments and get treated for his extra needs.

However, Nathaniel was stubborn and did not trust anyone. He did not agree that he needed help and was perfectly content living on the streets and playing his violin in the tunnel. After visiting the factory more, he began to let his guard down and even started staying in his apartment. Lopez even contacts some of Ayers’ old friends and family, and sets up visitation with him in his apartment in Los Angeles’ Skid Row area.

Through some reasoning breakdowns and stresses in their relationship, Ayers and Lopez learn to trust and understand each other in ways they never expected. Lopez learns that Nathaniel has extra needs and he cannot expect to convert him over night. Ayers learns that every person is not out to get him, and that Citizen no ifs ands or buts can be trusted. They both learn that Nathaniel is still an marvelous musician, and needs music in his life to stay content.

In the end, Nathaniel gains a friend in Steve Lopez, becomes acquainted with old friends who are pro musicians, and has a safe place to live. Not only does he have an apartment, but Lopez and the safe house dedicate a space to Nathaniel where he can custom and teach others to play. They even name the music room after Nathaniel. Overall, this book was an easy read, but highly entertaining. The story makes you feel good and give more appreciation to those with reasoning disabilities. It also helps Citizen realize that every person has a story to their lives and deserves respect. This book is rated 4.5 out of 5.

Find out how to get absolutely free psychic readings here – but note that free readings aren’t necessarily the best quality (the quality is often dubious, and therefore the whole practice can be a meaningless waste of time) so it can sometimes pay off better to consult properly with a psychic reader who will of course charge for the time they spend with you.

Some free readings will be provided by proper psychics, but they just won’t give you the whole story or limit the time they spend on it – it is free after all, and many will earn their living from doing proper paid readings. It’s important to respect this, rather than expect too much for free and end up abusing the privilege.

Snippet

An absolutely free psychic reading though can serve to introduce you to a particular psychic or medium who you end up feeling comfortable with, and then go back to at a later stage for a more in-depth, albeit paid, reading with them.

Firstly, decide why you want the psychic reading. Is there a specific question you are looking to address? Do you really require a psychic reading, or is it perhaps that you just need someone to talk through any issues that are currently affecting you. If there is a specific question you are looking to answer, or a specific issue you need to address, write it down before then attempting to find absolutely free psychic readings.

And as they are free, it can sometimes be useful to get three or more done. Often, they will differ considerably in what they tell you, can be highly negative, or the complete opposite, and give you a highly positive outcome (so don’t start panicking if the first one you get is negative!). After you’ve got a few done, you can extract the main points from each, to gain a more balanced perspective – or even decide that one of more of them made no sense at all.

When getting a free reading, don’t try to milk it for all it’s worth, but accept that the information you get will of course be very limited, and you should instead view it as a small free gift. Be realistic in terms of your expectations.

You should also bear in mind what the purpose of the free reading is for the psychic – it is to help bring in business for them, and attract possible customers to the service they are providing. The idea of course is that they provide you with a useful snippet of information, and you then come back wanting to know more. Those good at their job will leave you with cliff-hanger-like suspense so you’re desperate to know more and come back to them for a full consultation.

So it’s important to be aware of that before you get your absolutely free psychic reading.

Finally, don’t take it too seriously, or you could become addicted to readings into the future, and forget to live your life, as it is, now. After all, ‘now’ is the only meaningful reality. See it as a bit of fun, light-hearted entertainment, almost like day-dreaming where you switch off from every day life for a bit and enter a fantasy world of possibilities for your future.

I gave up drinking cold turkey with the help of my friends in Alcoholics Anonymous some nearly six years ago now. I have never missed it. I was not a drop-dead, “blackout” drunk but I did binge drink[1] many a weekend evening for years and it had started to affect other areas of my life, like for instance, work (not that anything I think knew other than me). It had some less-than-obvious-to-the-outsider house impacts as well.

Those who have a drinking question ordinarily have a question with habitancy not drinking. They mirror their own needs onto the situation and feel relieved when others share in their pastime. It validates them, for conspiratorially they loath the fact that they’re hooked on booze.

Book Snippet

So what does the Bible in the Wisdom tradition say about drinking? There are some Christian habitancy I’m sure either aren’t aware or don’t seem to care about what it advises.

I found some proverbs in chapters 23 and 31 of that great book. There is also a snippet of value in Ecclesiastes. Realistically, however, Psalms and Song of Songs also are littered with allusions to drinking and drunkenness, but it is never seen as virtuous.

For starters, drunkards and gluttons become poor and their drowsiness clothes them in rags (Proverbs 23:20-21). They’re oblivious to the fact of their own beating because they care only for the next drink (v. 35). They have woes, sorrow, strife and complaining (v. 29).

People who make much ado about alcohol and events imbued by alcohol are going down into a dark pit of their own misery. In the end drink stings like a viper (v. 32).

Proverbs 31 features the study to King Lemuel from his mum (vs. 4-7). She censures him about the folly of drink, for it is not for a nobleman. Inebriation taints the senses of judgment and any leader (let alone a king) will do well to avoid it.

Who drinks for the pure taste of the stuff? I’m not sure anything does. Alcohol produces infinitely more harm than the very small (anecdotal) good it’s alleged to produce. Alcohol is clearly the drug of selection for those who are already miserable; those who are poor, perishing and in anguish.

Finally, Ecclesiastes 10:17 mentions that good fare and wine are fine for construction strength, not drunkenness. And this is the test. Have a drink or two. If that can’t be your limit, give it away.

We do well to heed the study of the ancients. In a time of extended prosperity, the Western world is plagued with much binge drinking and its resultant abuses and neglect, the effects of which are at times catastrophic, personally and culturally.

[1] Drinking five or more [standard] drinks at a time is thought about binge drinking for men. For women, this number is four or more. (Source: www.hsc.wvu.edu/som/cmed/alcohol/glossary.htm) A approved drink is smaller than that which is usually served.

The more I work with authors to help them understand the ins and outs of online book marketing, the more I perceive that there are five basic and basal mistakes that 9 out of 10 authors consistently make.

If you don’t fall victim to these five book marketing fiascoes, you’ll be ahead of the pack…way ahead. So, here are five things to avoid when marketing your books online:

Book

1. Inadequate Keyword Research

This is the #1 big kahuna and the place where 99% of authors quite naturally stuff it up. Most of the authors I work with have had exiguous to no success marketing themselves and their books online because they’re not thinking the way Internet marketers think — they have no systematic plan for finding, targeting and finally dominating a list of keywords and phrases associated to their book or expertise.

In order to have success online, you need to notify yourself with the view of long-tail keywords; to understand how to analyze your competition; and how to know, with approximately certainty, how much traffic a singular keyword gets.

Thankfully there are tools out there that do all three. You can find them at the links at the end of this article. Be sure to check them out.

2. Thin Content

Surprisingly, even prolific authors with many books to their reputation — gifted writers who can write volumes on their area of expertise — somehow think that they can skate by online with just a merge pages (or even paragraphs!) of content.

Not true.

Here’s the deal: Google and the other hunt engines Love content-rich sites. This is why behemoths like Wikipedia get so much traffic. They have millions of pages in Google’s index. How many pages from your site does Google know or care about? My guess is it’s probably in the middle of two and five.

You’ll never rank well for anything other than your name with that kind of site. Lowest line: don’t think you can shortchange population online. If you want your site found, and you want potential readers to care about your book, demonstrate why they should by providing great free article upfront.

3. Ignoring social Marketing and Web 2.0

If you haven’t noticed, the Internet is changing. In just the past merge of years, sites like Facebook, Digg, YouTube, and EzineArticles.com, along with services such as Twitter, have wholly changed the way population interact online.

Gone is the top-down coming of “yesterday’s” media, which is fast being substituted by a bottom-up system where real people, not editors, resolve what’s hot and what’s not.

If you’re not using the sites mentioned above, along with about 100 others that can help you sell more books, you’re missing the biggest sea convert in online marketing that you’ve ever seen. (See the links below for resources that will help you identify dozens of sites where you should be marketing your books.)

4. Failing to Build a Base of Support

It’s spectacular, how many authors don’t take advantage of the most remarkable online marketing tool there is — the potential to build a base of reserve and loyal fans straight through things like mailing lists, or “followers” on Twitter, or subscribers to an Rss feed, or any amount of other methods that customary Internet marketers naturally take for granted.

Here’s why this is so important: it’s infinitely easier to sell to population who already know, like and trust you than it is to sell to population who have no idea who you are.

If someone buys one of your books, they’re an ideal buyer for your second, third, and fourth books. But if you have no way to reach the population who bought your first book, you’re going to have to go straight through the whole “customer-acquisition” process each and every time for every new book.

Wouldn’t it be easier to write a merge emails and send them to your fans? Or to naturally put a post up on your blog with a new book announcement? This is the way authors build empires.

5. Trying to Sell Your Book

What? That’s a mistake? But isn’t that the point? Yes and no. I’d argue that by focusing on selling your book to the exclusion of all else (see point #4 above), too many authors literally miss out on the long-term benefits of generating a loyal following online — the kind of following that buys hundreds of thousands of books.

What’s better, selling one or two books a day now, or selling thousands of books a day a year from now? Stop struggling. Start construction information empires the way the most successful Internet marketers do. Stop trying to sell a book or two here and there. Start focusing on getting great article out to the population who need your book.

Sales (like you’ve never experienced before!) will inevitably follow.

Vintage images can add a nostalgic dimension to your scrapbooking. Whether they are illustrations from an artist’s hand, early photographs, or antique paper items like advertisements, newspapers or other ephemera, they lend instant artwork to your scrapbooking project. These pictures from the past also capture the essence of an occasion or an emotion, verifying that the important things in life don’t change over time.

Many kinds of vintage images are available digitally through simple online downloads — just try a Google search for “vintage images.” Though most will be in the public domain, be aware of any usage restrictions you find.

Snippet

Here are eight ideas to spark your imagination!

Use the full image as a centerpiece. Choose an image that reflects the theme of your page; a photo of an antique car for your page about your son’s new car; a jolly Victorian St. Nicholas for a Christmas page; a vintage Eiffel Tower photo for your Paris vacation page. Place the image centrally and lay out your photos around it.

Enlarge the image as your background. Many images are perfect for backgrounds, such as handwriting on aged paper or a pastoral scene. If the digital image is high resolution (150-300 dpi), you can probably enlarge it to the size of your scrapbook page. Use the background colors to determine your photo matting palette. Layout your photos, text and embellishments so the background image peeks through.

Cut out “scraps” as embellishments. A major pastime for Victorian women was cutting out small illustrations (called “scraps”) and pasting them in books – hence, scrapbooks. Many vintage images include comical figures, holiday symbols, good-luck charms, and more. Simply resize and print them from your computer and cut them out with manicure scissors. Glue them onto your page where you need a nostalgic embellishment!

Create frames or borders from the images. Many vintage postcards and greeting cards were designed with fanciful decorative borders. Resize and print them on your computer, cut out the center, and you have an ornate vintage frame for your photos or text.

Use vintage written sentiments as inspiration for your journaling. Long before Hallmark, Victorian-era postcards were created for all occasions (even Leap Year) with snippets of poetry and flowery sentiments. Incorporate these texts and artwork into your scrapbook page for a touching message from the past.

Borrow the colors from an image to set the palette for your scrapbook page. Choose an image that attracts you with colors, bright or subdued, or even a striking black and white or sepia-tone photo. Use those colors and shades in your background, matting and texts to create a harmonized, coordinated look.

Alter vintage images with paint, ink, rubber stamping or other treatments. “Altered art” is both fun and trendy. Take a basic image and add your own touches with paint, foil, cutting, folding, stamping, embossing, burning — pretty much anything. What you add and how you do it can make an image comical, provocative or nostalgic. When in doubt — it seems — put butterfly wings on a baby photo.

Let your personal photos “interact” with vintage images. Find a vintage photo or illustration that fits your theme — perhaps a picture of a seated Santa. Now, size and cut out a silhouette of your child, and place her on Santa’s lap. Or, start with a vintage beach scene, with everyone posing in long-legged bathing dresses. Add your daughter to the lineup in her bikini. You are limited only by your dexterity with scissors or your prowess with your computer’s graphics software.

These eight ideas are just a start. Virtually any scrapbooking technique can be applied to vintage images. Happy scrapping!

The U.S. Department of State Passport Services recently began issuing the passport card as an alternative to the former passport book. In a short period of time, Passport Services received over 350,000 applications for the passport card. What is the purpose of the passport card? How does it differ from the passport book? Which trip document should you choose? Is one better than the other? These are just a few of the questions for which you will find answers below.

You may use the passport card when traveling by land and sea anywhere in the U.S. When you arrive from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and the Caribbean. The Passport care may Not be used if you are going to trip by air. Other than that, it carries all of the privileges and right of the U.S. Passport book.

Book

The State Department has begun issuing passport cards in response to the needs of resident communities that are located on the borders of our great country. It is a less costly and a much more transportable alternative to the former passport book. The passport card has the same validity as the passport book – ten years for adults and five years for children ages 15 and younger. If an adult already has a passport book, they may apply for the card and only have to pay because it would be carefully as a passport renewal. First time adult applicants will pay a fee of while for children it is .

The passport card contains a radio frequency identification chip or Rfid in order to facilitate U.S. Citizens who are living in border communities. No personal facts is written on the Rfid chip.

The U.S. State Department along with the Department of Homeland security stated that the U.S. Passport Card is now in full yield and is also being distributed. The Passport Card is a favorable document that you can slip right into your wallet and is used for land and sea travel. It is Not valid for international air travel.

Starting in June, 2009, travelers will have to show their Passport Card that denotes both their identity and citizenship when advent into the U.S. Straight through a sea or land border.

Passport Cards Vs. Passport Books

Passport Book- Valid if you trip by air, sea and land

Passport Card – This is only valid if you trip by sea and land only. It is miniature to trip in the middle of the United States and Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Bermuda.

Passport Book and Passport Cards – These are both valid for adults for 10 years and 5 years for minors

Passport Book Cost – The first time fee for an adult applicant is 0 and for minors. This includes both the application fee and the performance fee.

Passport Card Cost – for those 16 and over including performance fee and for those under 16.

It there is the slightest opening that you might trip by air over the next 10 years, I would advise that you go ahead and regain the passport book. It allows you to trip anywhere that you can with the passport card with the supplementary advantage of being able to trip by air. Just keep in mind that the book is a bit more expensive. If you don’t mind the expense, you may opt for both the passport book and the passport card.
